Wow- excellent post! There’s something about the balance of your personal experience/inquiry/journey with your intense scholarship that makes this topic more accessible than I would have expected. I’m drawn in-- I want to learn more. Thank you!

An incredibly astute and synergistic account of the rise of dehumanizing nationalism in China, with important historical insights. You're really up to something to locate the rise of Chinese nationalism already in the Jiang period. Previous scholarship on Chinese nationalist education separated more clearly between Deng/Jiang and a post-2000s nationalist education syllabus, but your make a compelling case that the roots of this self-victimizing nationalism run deeper. Can't wait for your next post!

This is so intriguing and enlightening. I hope you write a book someday (if you want to, that is)!

Thank you, Lu! You gave me one of the best book recommendations for me ever, “In the Garden of Beasts.” Yes, I’m thinking about writing a book in the future.
